Don’t Get Flooded Out

Local storm chaser addresses flash floods

BY DAVID BROOKSHIER READING THE SKY GUEST COLUMNIST

It's been unrelenting, numerous storms and floods day after day.

As long as the blocking pattern remains in place providing fuel for daily thunderstorms much of the Texas panhandle will remain under a historic flood threat. With soils already over saturated it's vital to be prepared.

Flash floods are the number one weather related killer, they are especially dangerous at night.

If you encounter water that covers the roadway turn around, dont drown.

It only takes a foot of water to move most vehicles. People often try to cross a flooded roadway only to be carried off into a ditch. A flooded road often

conceals a large crater that gets washed out, you won't notice this hidden hazzard until you drive into it!

If the water is deep enough it will disable a vehicle's computer system or flood your engine intake causing it to stall out. Driving too fast, hydroplaning, and then losing control results in a multitude of crashes every year, something to be on guard for in the week ahead.

Never underestimate the power of water, stay safe out there.
